Initially implicated for medical conditions, Botox and Dysport injections are now widely used for cosmetic purposes, as well. They are popular non-surgical options that soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, delivering quick results without any downtime.

By injecting precise doses of these controlled neurotoxins into very specific points of a target muscle, we can temporarily block nerve activity and relax the muscle. In cosmetic uses, Botox and Dysport ultimately soften the appearance of lines and creases in the overlying skin of target muscles; anywhere else in the body, their prolonged muscle-relaxing effects can be beneficial for a wide array of medical conditions such as spasms, migraines and bruxism (teeth grinding).

Botox or Dysport Treatments: Medical or Cosmetic

The onset of effects is seen after 3 to 7 days, and full effects take place after 14 days. While these effects are dramatic and appreciable, they are unfortunately only temporary as the neurotoxins are eventually metabolized by the body. To achieve long-term results, treatments need to be maintained every 6 months.

If you’ve already tried Botox in the past and want to try something new, Dysport is a great option that may provide quicker results. Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) was approved by Health Canada in October 2018 for the temporary improvement in appearance of moderate to severe laugh lines around the outer edges of the eyes and frown lines. Dysport has been available globally for 25 years and has been approved based on 11 clinical trials for aesthetic use in 24 countries. The most observed adverse reactions in the studies of Dysport were mild to moderate swelling of the eyelid, headache, and injection site reactions (bruising, itching, and swelling).* Rarely, if it migrates to the upper eyelid, one can experience a slight drooping of the eyelid which corrects itself after a short while. Dysport is contraindicated in patients with infection at the proposed injection site, patients with known allergies to cow’s milk protein and pregnant or lactating women. Caution should be exercised in patients with neuromuscular junction disorders and in patients using blood thinners. Patients who experience excessive weakness or atrophy (reduction in size) of the target muscle, or who experience prolonged bleeding after injection are cautioned against repeat treatments.

The cost of the treatment depends on the amount of units used, which is dictated by the number of target areas and the size of the underlying muscles. The cost of one unit is $12.00 plus GST. An average treatment can use 20 to 50 units, though some people require more to achieve their desired results.
